The Major Forts

Amber Fort

The crown jewel of Jaipur's heritage. This massive hilltop fortress was the Kachwaha Rajput capital before Jaipur city existed. Red sandstone and white marble palaces overlook Maota Lake.

Ganesh Pol — Stunning painted gateway
Sheesh Mahal — Hall of Mirrors (thousands of mirror fragments)
Sukh Niwas — Palace with ancient air conditioning (water channels)
Zenana — Women's quarters with latticed windows

Arrive at 8 AM for cool temperatures and fewer crowds
Walk up the ramp (10 minutes) rather than take an elephant

Nahargarh Fort

The fort of the "abode of tigers," perched on the Aravalli hills overlooking Jaipur. Less architecturally impressive than Amber, but the views are unbeatable.

Sunset point — Best sunset spot in Jaipur
Padao Restaurant — Rooftop cafe with views

6 km from old city (uphill)

Come for sunset — the light on the city is magical
The restaurant is overpriced but the view is free

Jaigarh Fort

Built: 1726 Entry: ₹200 (foreigners), separate from composite Time needed: 1-1.5 hours Opens: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM

The military fortress above Amber Fort, connected by underground passages. Houses the world's largest cannon on wheels — the Jaivana, which was never fired in battle.

What to See:

Jaivana Cannon — 50 tonnes, 20-foot barrel
Armoury — Swords, shields, guns
Views of Amber Fort — From above
Underground passages — Connect to Amber (not all open)

Same hilltop as Amber Fort
Walk or drive from Amber (15 minutes)
Or approach via road from Nahargarh

The Old City

City Palace

Built: 1727-1732 Entry: ₹700 (foreigners) — NOT included in composite Time needed: 2-2.5 hours Opens: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM

The heart of Jaipur. This palace complex was home to the Maharajas and still partially houses the royal family. A blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture.

Mubarak Mahal — Guest palace, now textile museum
Sarvato Bhadra — Audience hall with silver urns (world's largest)
Diwan-i-Khas — Private audience hall
Pritam Niwas Chowk — Four gates representing seasons
Chandra Mahal — Seven-storey palace (exterior view only)

Start early — afternoons get crowded
The museum has excellent textiles and arms
Photography allowed (no flash in textile museum)

Hawa Mahal

The "Palace of Winds" — Jaipur's most iconic image. Built so royal women could watch street processions without being seen, the facade has 953 small windows.

What to See:

The Facade — Best photographed from across the street
Interior — Climb through narrow passages to windows
Views — Look out the same windows as royalty did

Tips:

The view from across the street (Wind View Cafe) is better than inside
Interior is small — don't expect a full palace
Best light: morning (east-facing facade)
Crowded midday — come early

Jantar Mantar

A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The world's largest stone sundial and 18 other astronomical instruments built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

Jai Prakash Yantra — Hemispherical sundials
Ram Yantra — For measuring altitudes
Chakra Yantra — For determining declination

Albert Hall Museum

Indo-Saracenic architecture housing eclectic collections — Egyptian mummy, textiles, pottery, weapons, and more.

Sculptures — Hindu and Jain works

Tips:

The building itself is worth seeing
Night illumination is beautiful (view from outside)
Less crowded than forts
Good midday option (air-conditioned)

Birla Mandir

Modern white marble temple on a hilltop, dedicated to Lakshmi and Narayan. Beautiful at sunset.

Govind Dev Ji Temple

Entry: Free Time needed: 30 minutes

Important Krishna temple within City Palace complex. Crowded during aarti times.

Galta Ji (Monkey Temple)

Entry: Free Time needed: 1-1.5 hours

Ancient temple complex in a gorge, home to hundreds of monkeys. Holy water tanks. Off the tourist trail.

Warning: Monkeys are bold. Don't carry food or loose items.

Sisodia Rani Garden

Entry: Included in composite ticket Time needed: 30-45 minutes

Terraced Mughal garden with fountains and murals. Peaceful escape from crowds.
