Seven centuries old and wide awake: Six Senses Fort Barwara

A 14th-century Rajput fort near Ranthambhore, restored over more than a decade into 48 suites, a vast spa and Rajasthan's plushest tiger base.

Six Senses Fort Barwara

Most heritage hotels have a story. Six Senses Fort Barwara has a walled town's worth: two palaces and two temples inside one 14th-century fort, built by the Chauhans and originally owned by a Rajasthani royal family, by the hotel's telling. During the Second World War, Raja Man Singh of Barwara fought alongside the British and came home with the title Rao Bahadur. The fort itself gradually went quiet. It took the Espire group and the conservation architects of Panika more than a decade to wake it up, and it reopened as a hotel in October 2021, facing the Chauth ka Barwara Mandir temple.

Suites the size of small palaces

The film

There are 48 suites, five of them one-offs, dressed in a contemporary Rajasthani style that flatters the old stone rather than competing with it. East Wing suites look over open countryside, West Wing suites over Barwara village. Even the snuggest Fort Suite runs to 753 square feet, and the Raja Man Singh Pool Suite tops out at just over 3,000, with a circular pool built into a fort tower and its own dining pavilion. In between sit rooftop hot tub suites and the Burj Suite, which hides an oversized bathroom inside a turret.
