Sleep where Sula began: a night at The Source

Every wine country eventually works out that visitors want to stay the night, and Nashik got there in style. The Source at Sula is the estate's answer, built on the site of what the house calls Sula's historic first ever winery, the one they credit with heralding Nashik's rise as India's greatest wine region. They go as far as calling it India's first heritage winery resort. Big claims, but the setting does most of the persuading for them.
The place photographs like a daydream of somewhere between Tuscany and the Deccan. A long cream villa with a red-tiled roof, arched verandas and lavender-grey shutters sits against a wooded hillside, fronted by a garden of palms, stepping-stone paths and a lotus pond. Inside, the lounge rises a full two storeys, with vast arched windows, wing chairs and cane armchairs scattered across a honey-coloured floor. By the house's own telling, the rooms look out over Sula's vineyards, framed by the Deccan hills and reaching towards Gangapur Lake.
Rooms are named after the world's famous wine regions, they say, and there are nine types to choose between. Vintage Rooms start at 330 sq ft, the duplex Tower Suite gets a white marble living floor, and the Hermitage Suite tops out at 1,150 sq ft with a soaking tub and a grand balcony over vines, hills and lake. The wild cards are the tree houses, 270 sq ft cabins on stilts that the house says its own artisans crafted in acacia wood. Book the vineyard-view version and you wake to rows of vines with, as they put it, not even a picket fence to block the view. Their photographs back this up: a four-poster draped in white netting, a private deck, and green rows running clear to the horizon.
This being Sula, the grape is never far away. A stay comes with a complimentary winery tour and tasting, by the house's own telling, and there are four restaurants to work through: La Bodega, Tasting Room, Rasa and Starlight Terrace. Between meals there is a temperature-controlled outdoor pool with a jacuzzi, a spa and fitness centre, and bicycles for pottering through the vineyards. Breakfast is a buffet, and the house rules are firm on one point worth knowing: no pets.
We should say we have not published rates here, because the hotel's own site does not display real ones. What we can say is that a vineyard stay this photogenic, pitched by the house as a resort near Mumbai and sitting on the site of Sula's first winery, is exactly the sort of place we like to haggle over. Tell us your dates below and our concierge will make it happen. When we land a deal here, members hear first.
