Major Monuments

Victoria Memorial

Built: 1906-1921 Style: Indo-Saracenic (Italian Renaissance + Mughal) Entry: ₹500 (foreigners), ₹30 (Indians) Hours: 10 AM - 5 PM (closed Monday)

White marble monument to Queen Victoria. Kolkata's defining landmark. Gardens, museum, and the building itself make this essential.

What to See:

  • Main building — Stunning marble facade, dome
  • Museum — Raj-era paintings, artifacts, Kolkata history
  • Royal Gallery — Queen Victoria collection
  • Gardens — 64 acres, evening crowds, pleasant walking

Tips:

  • Visit late afternoon for sunset light
  • Gardens open earlier (6 AM) for morning walks
  • Sound and light show in evenings (check schedule)
  • Allow 2-3 hours

Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu)

Built: 1943 Style: Cantilever bridge Entry: Free

One of the world's busiest bridges. 80,000+ vehicles daily. No nuts or bolts — entirely riveted and pinned. Walking across is a Kolkata essential.

Best Experience:

  • Dawn walk — Cross from Howrah side as city wakes
  • Flower market below — Mullik Ghat's morning chaos
  • Boat views — Ferries pass underneath

Indian Museum

Built: 1814 (current building 1875) Style: Italian Renaissance Entry: ₹500 (foreigners), ₹75 (Indians) Hours: 10 AM - 5 PM (closed Monday)

India's oldest and largest museum. Eclectic collection — archaeology, art, geology, zoology.

Highlights:

  • Buddha relics
  • Egyptian mummy
  • Ashoka pillar capitals
  • Natural history section
  • Indian art galleries

Allow: 2-3 hours

Marble Palace

Built: 1835 Entry: Free (permit from WBTDC required) Hours: 10 AM - 4 PM (closed Monday, Thursday)

Eccentric Victorian mansion built by Raja Rajendra Mullick. Still family-owned. Cluttered with European art, mirrors, chandeliers, and a private zoo.

What to See:

  • European paintings (some attributed to Rubens)
  • Venetian chandeliers
  • Marble statues
  • Private zoo with birds, peacocks

Colonial Architecture

BBD Bagh (Dalhousie Square)

Heart of British Calcutta. Colonial buildings surround tank (water body).

Notable Buildings:

  • Writer's Building — Secretariat, 1777 (under renovation)
  • GPO — General Post Office, domed
  • Reserve Bank Building
  • St John's Church — 1787, oldest church

Best: Walk around the square in morning

Park Street

Colonial buildings, cemeteries, restaurants.

South Park Street Cemetery One of the earliest non-church cemeteries. Elaborate tombs of British residents. Atmospheric, peaceful.

Asiatic Society Oldest learned society in India (1784).

Chowringhee

The main street of British Calcutta.

Indian Museum — On this road Grand Hotel — Historic hotel Oberoi Grand — Another heritage hotel


Religious Heritage

Dakshineswar Temple

Built: 1855 Entry: Free

Kali temple on the Hooghly, where Ramakrishna attained enlightenment. Beautiful setting, peaceful atmosphere.

Getting there: North of city. Taxi or ferry from Belur Math.

Belur Math

Built: 1897-1938 Entry: Free

Headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission. Eclectic architecture blending Hindu, Christian, and Islamic elements. Founded by Swami Vivekananda.

What to See:

  • Main temple (unique architecture)
  • Ramakrishna's room (preserved)
  • Museum
  • Peaceful gardens

Tips:

  • Combine with Dakshineswar (opposite bank)
  • Morning or evening best
  • Modest dress required

Kalighat Temple

Age: Ancient (current structure 19th century) Entry: Free (donations)

One of 51 Shakti Peethas. Intense, chaotic, very local. Not for the faint-hearted — animal sacrifices occur.

Tips:

  • Go with a guide or local
  • Ignore pandas (priests) demanding money
  • Keep belongings secure

Paresnath Jain Temple

Built: 1867 Entry: Free

Opulent Jain temple with mirrors, colored glass, and gardens. In Kolkata's traditional Marwari area.


Raj-Era Clubs

Bengal Club

India's first social club (1827). Members only, but the building is visible.

Calcutta Cricket Club

Historic cricket ground.

Tolly Club

Golf course established 1895.


Heritage Walks

BBD Bagh / Dalhousie Walk

Colonial architecture, Writer's Building, GPO. 2-3 hours.

North Kolkata Walk

Old mansions, Tagore House, Kumartuli. 3-4 hours.

Art Deco Walk

Kolkata has significant Art Deco buildings from 1930s.

Unique Heritage

Kumartuli

Idol-making neighbourhood. Artisans create clay Durga, Kali, and other gods. Most atmospheric before Durga Puja. Free to walk through.

Trams

Kolkata's heritage trams run since 1902. Slow but atmospheric. Ride for experience.

Anglo-Indian Heritage

Bowbazar, Park Street areas have Anglo-Indian communities. Churches, cemeteries, architecture reflect this culture.

Chinese Heritage

Tiretti Bazaar has early morning Chinese breakfast. Tangra has Chinese temples and restaurants.
