Why we love it

"A 1978 caravanserai reborn as mud huts and chalets in the Indus Valley"

The sarai, revived

The name is meant literally. Ladakh Sarai traces its beginnings to 1978 — set up, the property says, by British adventure-travel pioneers shortly after Ladakh opened to visitors — and takes its cue from the caravanserais of the old Silk Road: waypoints where travellers stopped, rested and gathered themselves for the next stage. It is now in Ladakhi hands, stewarded by Lotus Sandup and Rigzin Namgyal, who have carried the idea further up-country with sister sarais in Zanskar and a five-tent camp on a mountainside farm.

The Leh flagship sits in Ayu village in the Indus Valley, built the Ladakhi way in stone and mud among poplars and garden beds. Rooms come as duplexes, chalets and mud huts, and each duplex and chalet opens to a balcony facing the valley. There is a wooden-floored yoga hall with the mountains in its windows, a library kept for unhurried reading, and a kitchen that leans on what the region gives — sun-ripened apricots, foraged herbs, mountain trout.

A place built on the oldest idea in Himalayan travel: stop properly before you go on.

The house philosophy is slow travel — landscape, Buddhist culture and acclimatisation taken at walking pace rather than ticked off.

Leh · Boutique hotel

Leh & Ladakh

A contemporary hotel on Old Leh Road, built the old Ladakhi way: thick, buttressed walls of compressed earth blocks made on site. Leh's main market is 350 metres away, Leh Palace just over a kilometre. Juniper, the ground-floor restaurant, works Ladakhi and Tibetan flavours through its menus, and the bathroom floors are heated — which, in a Leh winter, is no small thing.

Wayanad

A 150-acre stretch of Wayanad rainforest the founders came across in 1993, six coffee-workers' row houses standing on it; today there are 36 villas and cottages, plus tree houses up in the canopy, beside a forest stream crossed by a swaying rope bridge. No TVs, no air-conditioning, patchy signal, quite deliberately. Kerala Ayurveda at the spa; the Malabar whistling thrush does the wake-up call.
