By enquiry Pondicherry
A mansion-style stay in Pondicherry's French Quarter where whitewashed arches and high ceilings meet the salt-air bustle of the Tamil coast just outside the door.
"A 1936 Art Deco house on Lucknow's Mall Avenue, now a 41-room heritage hotel"
The bones are a 1936 kothi on the Mall Avenue — the garden-house form in which Lucknow once entertained — refurbished in 2016 and now run as a 41-room boutique hotel on the Saraca Estate. The hotel names its spirit Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb, the city's composite culture, and the fabric bears it out: Art Deco lines and terrazzo floors, coloured-glass doors and cane chairs, nawabi décor and lawns on every side.
Rooms climb from the compact Awadh and Residency categories to Heritage and Imperial Suites with four-poster beds and double-vanity bathrooms; most of the suites open into the central courtyard, the Sehen, where café tables come out in the evening.
Lucknow's kothi culture kept in daily use, not under glass.
The kitchens take the city seriously. Azrak draws on the kitchens of the Nawabs; 1936 Ristorante and Asian Table look further afield; Jalsa is an Arabian-styled private dining room; and the Saraca Rooftop Lounge takes over after dark. There is an outdoor pool with the house behind it, a spa, and the halls and lawns that earn the hotel its wedding trade.
Rooms of up to 200 sq ft with local Awadh decor, for up to two adults and a child.
250 sq ft rooms in the hotel's nawabi Art Deco manner, for up to two adults and a child.
500 sq ft suites with Awadh-inspired art, four-poster beds and double-vanity bathrooms with bathtubs; most open into the central courtyard — the Sehen — or the garden.
The largest category at 550 sq ft: four-poster beds, Awadh-inspired art, double-vanity bathrooms with bathtubs and a choice of sit-outs.

By enquiry Sixty four rooms above Hanuman Ghat and the oldest rooftop pool in Udaipur, by the house's own telling. Dusk up there outshines the palace bars.
By enquiry A 13-room boutique hotel in Agra's Taj Nagri, built by three friends with deep roots in the city. Rooms borrow from the Taj's arches and inlay work, the kitchen serves family recipes from within 50 km, and the tours go where day-trippers never do.
