Why we love it

"A Kupawat Rathore family castle near Dausa, now a 52-room heritage resort between Jaipur and Ranthambore"

The story

Talabgaon's history begins, by the family's account, in the early 18th century, when Thakur Sardul Singh Kupawat Rathore of Jodhpur found himself on the wrong side of an awkward question: war had broken out between Jaipur and Jodhpur over the salt-rich Sambhar Lake while he was a guest of Jaipur relatives. Having 'eaten the salt' of Jaipur, honour demanded he fight for his hosts — which he did, with his Maharaja's blessing. Jaipur won, and the jagir of Talabgaon was bestowed on him. The castle standing today, Vijay Mahal, was built in 1900 by Thakur Vijay Singh ji Rathore, a direct descendant, and remains in the family — they describe it as a living fort, occupied for over 200 years. The restoration kept the structure in its original form: painted glass depicting Indian mythology by Jaipur artisans, stone pillars brought from Sikandra, and wall carvings by artists from Chaksu, 30 km away.

Rooms

There are 52 accommodations across three categories — Heritage Suites and Heritage Rooms at 350 square feet, and Deluxe Rooms at 300 — restored, the hotel says, with rich fabrics, woodwork, marble and silk drapes drawn from Rajasthan's warm palette.

The table

The kitchen leans on the estate's own vegetable and wheat farms; the family says growing and eating organic food is a tradition hundreds of years old here, and the farm-to-table page reads like a small manifesto. Bagh Bahar, a lavish brunch in the castle gardens, is pitched at day visitors breaking the Jaipur–Ranthambore run as much as at house guests.

Beyond the walls

This is unhurried, rural Rajasthan: camel safaris and camel-cart rides, horse treks and even polo chukkers, music nights, village and temple visits, an infinity pool, and lunch at a traditional mud house on the local farm. Ranthambore National Park is about an hour and a half away; the hotel asks for 24 hours' notice for on-ground activities such as jeep safaris, camel-cart rides and park visits.
