Why we love it

"Pool villas and pond-view suites in a Pollachi coconut grove"

Pollachi is coconut country, and Coco Lagoon leans into it: a resort set in a coconut grove on the rural edge of Coimbatore district, arranged around a pond, with the Western Ghats supplying the birdlife.

Coconut grove, with a loom

The rooms climb a neat ladder. Executive Deluxe rooms are the compact opening bid; the Tropical Suites choose between an upstairs balcony and direct lawn access; Pondview Suites put the water outside the window; and the pool villas — plunge and private — finish the run, the latter billed by the resort as its flagship. Wooden interiors are the house style throughout.

The best souvenir here is watching a sari being born.

What separates Coco Lagoon from the pool-and-buffet crowd is the programme: a handloom village where sarees are woven from scratch to finish, a palm jaggery tour, bullock cart rides, and a granite amphitheatre for the evenings. Further afield the resort runs tea tours to Valparai and kayaking at Thirumoorthy Dam. The Palm, the multicuisine restaurant, covers dishes from around the world; the infinity pool covers the afternoons.

Leh & Ladakh

A contemporary hotel on Old Leh Road, built the old Ladakhi way: thick, buttressed walls of compressed earth blocks made on site. Leh's main market is 350 metres away, Leh Palace just over a kilometre. Juniper, the ground-floor restaurant, works Ladakhi and Tibetan flavours through its menus, and the bathroom floors are heated — which, in a Leh winter, is no small thing.
