Bani Park is the quiet, leafy answer to the walled city's happy chaos, and Dera Rawatsar sits in the middle of it — behind the Sindhi Camp bus station, with the metro 300 metres away and the railway station two kilometres off. The hotel says the house was built in 1950, and it is still run as a family concern by the House of Rawatsar, who trace their line to the Kandhlot Rathore clan of Rajputs. The arithmetic of sightseeing works nicely from here: the hotel puts the City Palace at 3.2 km, Hawa Mahal at 3 km, Jantar Mantar at 3.3 km and Amer Fort within 10 km.

The garden earns its keep. There is an outdoor pool with loungers, a high-tea service of scones and aromatic teas, private yoga sessions, and evening puppet shows with live folk music. The most Jaipur touch of all: a personalised horoscope reading by an expert priest, available on request.
