Jas Vilas sits on Sawai Jai Singh Highway in Bani Park, the residential quarter that Jaipur regulars use as a bolt-hole from the walled city. The hotel puts the City Palace area about five kilometres away and the railway station a kilometre and a half — close enough that the front desk is used to receiving guests off the early Udaipur and Jaisalmer trains before 8 am. The airport is 25 to 30 minutes by car; Amer Fort is around 14 km.
The house itself is the point. Mahendra and Rajyashree Singh developed the hotel from their ancestral family home, and the owners say their years of working in the West shaped the comforts they built into it. The courtyard is the postcard: tiers of balconies draped in bougainvillea looking down on a swimming pool with a hand-painted mural wall — clouds, florals and cranes — and 'Jas Vilas' spelt out on the pool floor in blue tiles.
Fourteen rooms in all: four with a large double bed, seven with two singles, and three Heritage rooms 'which will take you back to another era' — though the hotel's own FAQ counts just one Heritage Room, grander than the rest with a water fountain and antique furniture. Every room has air-conditioning, a large work desk, satellite HD TV, a safe, a refrigerator and a big bathroom — most with double sinks. Hot water comes off an in-house solar facility, and a generator keeps everything running through power cuts. Ground-floor rooms take wheelchairs, and there are ramps.
There is no laminated menu theatre here: delicious Indian meals are cooked freshly after the kitchen discusses your requirements with you. Breakfast (included), lunch and dinner can be taken in the air-conditioned dining room or at the poolside. Meals in the room are politely refused — but the balcony, the poolside and the lawns are all fair game.
Check-in is 2 pm, check-out noon; the front desk runs 8 am to 11 pm but arrivals outside those hours are handled. Children under five stay free. Two ATMs stand just outside the gate. Pets, alas, are not permitted.
